However, the average price of a surveillance job is around $50 per hour. And many times, tracking vehicles are a lot of sitting and waiting.

The Chicago SunTimes interviewed private investigator Paul Ciolino. “You can sit out there for four days, and nothing might happen,” he said. “If I have someone out there at $120 an hour for 14 hours a day and nothing happens, that gets expensive. But if the GPS says the car is going to a location every Thursday at 2, now you can go take a look.”

GPS auto tracking devices are small and can easily be placed in a car tire or underneath a seat cushion. As long as you own the car, placing a GPS tracking unit on it is legal.

In no fault states like Illinios, covert vehicle tracking may have no bearing on division of assets. However, these surveillance devices have proved useful in custody cases showing that one spouse may be an unfit parent.

The simplicity of GPS spy tracking has made many suspicious spouses jump on the electronic bandwagon. Others have questioned the lost human element in this transition. GPS tracking equipment can’t rummage through garbage for instance, but it does provide hard and fast proof that may hold up better than someone’s word.

GPS tracking units “aren’t the cure to cancer,” but they “add more credibility than saying, ‘I followed the person in a car,’ ” divorce attorney Michael W. Kalcheim said.

  1. I think both GPS auto tracking and human surveillance have their advantages and disadvantages. An auto tracking device is cheaper, but a skilled and professional private investigator has experience and human quality.

I’m not 100% sure what the wealth of apps out there are capable of in terms of personal tracking. But, standalone GPS units (http://www.brickhousesecurity.com/covert-small-gps-tracking-device.html) enable you to get incredibly detailed travel reports, speed reports and alerts sent directly to your phone. Pretty much, everything your iPhone can do, can still be done on your phone using a standalone GPS tracker; but, with added detail, and more customizable features.
