This is in high contrast to some of Facebook’s previous changes to the system, like their controversial Beacon feature which broadcasted information about a user’s activities on the web. This feature was very quickly removed and it resulted in a whopping $9.5 million settlement for some lucky Facebook members.

This time around Facebook was much more careful before they went ahead and implemented any radical new changes pertaining to user’s privacy. Facebook started testing out the changes as far back as June, when they announced a limited beta release which involved more than 1 million testers. Additionally, the company even took the extra steps to consult advocacy groups and offered them in-advance briefings through a non disclosure agreement.

Facebook spokesman Barry Schnitt says. “The scale that we tested this on dwarfs anything else that we’ve done before ….. Facebook is the scale of a country. Just like in any country where a policy change affects all of the people, there will be people who like that change and people who don’t like that change. We did our best to split those differences.”

This NOT person has stalked me & my family in the past, and am now very leary. I searched Facebook and could not find a link to answer this. There was not even a link to contact Facebook directly via e-mail or otherwise. Please help! Thanks so much.

    On what planet were the changes given a thumbs up? What a crack of bullsh-t if I ever heard it. It's been the complete opposite. In fact, I just deactivated my account. Now they are forcing us to post actions to the news feed, even if we previously disabled this feature. I don't want everyone knowing about my every move on Facebook. Why would I want that?? And why would I want everyone to know all of the contacts I've made thoughout my life that I worked hard for through networking?? Why force me to share any of that? They are ridiculous! And I hope another social networking site takes advantage of the hate a lot of people have for Facebook right now. The opportunity is ripe for the picking for the right company!
  • Overwhelmingly positive? Who are you listening to? They removed levels of privacy and control for users. I get that facebook has to make money, but these removals are unacceptable.
