Chinese Phishing Scheme Behind Latest Twitter Hacking Event
This past weekend Twitter users were subjected to a Chinese phishing scheme that stole many users Twitter login credentials. Apparently, the hackers used GroupTweet, so humorous links began appearing in individual tweets as well as many public feeds. The widespread reach of this virus has caused concerns for Twitter users.Links that followed postings such as ,”LoL, this is funny” and “LoL, this you?” brought users to a fake Twitter log-in screen that required users to enter their credentials. After doing so, a phony page popped up, claiming that there were too many tweets, and then quickly redirected users to the correct log-in page so they didn’t suspect anything had gone wrong.ch
“The cybercriminals behind the attack are creating a zombie network, or botnet, of hacked accounts that they can then abuse to spread spam, distribute malware and steal identities,” said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos.
If you believe you were a victim of this attack, you should change your password immediately. Even if you aren’t, it’s always a good idea to periodically change your passwords on all websites to protect your identity.
