Car Surfing: As Stupid and Dangerous as it Sounds

Teens and young adults are notorious for their stupidity—such is the process of growing up and gaining wisdom. But some things are just so stupid and dangerous that it just baffles others. Meet car surfing: a trend which has risen in the past few years. Yes, it is exactly what it sounds like. And yes, it is as stupid and dangerous as you’d think.

Car surfing is the act of getting out of a moving vehicle, usually going at a slow speed, and climbing on the roof or hood with no one behind the wheel driving. Needless to say, this shouldn’t be done even if there is someone driving the car.

“An injury even at those slow speeds can result in significant neurologic disability and even death,”  says neurologist Dr. Alan R. Cohen.

According to a CDC report, 58 people died in car surfing accidents alone and 41 were injured between 1990 and 2008. These are only the numbers from the reported cases, meaning the actual numbers are much higher; getting hurt falling off of a moving car isn’t exactly something people brag about.

So as a young adult or concerned parent, we recommend that you talk to your children or friends about car surfing, and make sure that they never consider doing something along these lines. As much fun as it might sound, it is definitely not worth dying or getting seriously injured over; and if nothing else, it’ll save you the embarrassment of explaining how you got hurt.
