facebook 419 scam 254x120 custom Another Person Becomes the Victim of a Facebook ScamAs much attention as this Facebook scam originally got, apparently people still seem to be falling for it. The scam we’re talking about is a hack scheme that mysteriously takes over a friend’s Facebook account and sends messages to all their friends begging them to send money. The story behind this scam is usually the same and basically says that the friend got robbed in London and needs money to get home. This is what shocks me the most, that the hacker continues to use the same story, which I heard about well over a month ago, and still manages to get people to fall for it.

In this case, the story remained the same, but with one tiny difference. It was the daughter of the friend that needed money. The victim, a Pennsylvania woman, trying to do a good deed for her friend’s daughter, wired her about $1,300. But soon found out exactly what had really happened. Right now this is being investigated but authorities have no leads, and nor do I expect them to catch the person since it is very easy to hide behind the Internet and cover up your trail.

As a lesson to all our loyal readers, next time you hear about one of your friends being stuck in London and asking for money, at least try to get in contact with them or their family and friends before even considering wiring them the money. And by in contact, I don’t mean Facebook chat or messages.

satellite 300x226 How To Hack Internet SatellitesSatellites can give us access to high speed Internet in even the most remote locations, such as in the middle of the dessert, on a a boat at sea, or even the Arctic. Unfortunately, with this great convenience, comes a great liability since hackers can easily break into these feeds to use them. Now, a Spanish cyber security researcher named Leonardo Nve, is presenting proof that not only is it easy and cheap (around $75) to hack into and use these satellite connections, but that it’s also easy for hackers to gain access to private networks, intercept satellite Internet users’ requests for web pages, replace them with spoofed sites, and they can do all of this anonymously.

“What’s interesting about this is that it’s very, very easy,” says Nve. “Anyone can do it: phishers or Chinese hackers … it’s like a very big Wi-Fi network that’s easy to access.”

Nve’s research proves that anyone using satellite Internet is not as safe as they think they are. A hacker that knows how to do this can set up fake websites designed to look and act like the real thing and steal your password information or install malicious software on your computer. So far, Nve has tested this out on geosynchronous satellites aimed at Europe, Africa and South America, but he says that there is little doubt that the same tricks would work on satellites facing North America or anywhere else.

What makes these attacks possible is that these satellite’s signals are usually left unencrypted due to logistical and legal issues with scrambling the signal. Encrypting the signal would make it much harder for companies to communicate with each other, and also has to do with the satellites sending out a signal to more than one country at a time. Different countries have different laws that have to do with Internet satellites, and it has been tough making them all agree on the same laws about how this hidden layer of the satellite security should be encrypted.

Even though there is nothing the companies and have nations agreed on yet, and it would take a lot of work, something has to be done. Nve’s work shows us just how vulnerable our satellite Internet is, and that if some ill-intended hackers or enemy states would start using this against us, it could potentially cause a lot of damage to both regular civilians and government agencies using satellite Internet.

frontbikerack6 300x224 Wondering Where Your Bus Is? GPS Tracking to Bring Up To Date Bus Schedules to AshevilleDo you ever try to estimate where your bus is and how long it will take to arrive to your location? You are not alone in your frustration. Thankfully, modern technology has a realistic solution for the traveling woes of commuters like you. GPS Tracking devices may soon help you better plan your trip to school or work when relying on public transportation. Brett McCall of Asheville, North Carolina, will propose a plan this Wednesday to the Transit Commission that calls for a relatively inexpensive GPS system to give commuters the real time location of city buses. McCall’s main point is that the cost of Glympse, the GPS program anticipated for the plan, is notably less expensive when juxtaposed to comparable tracking services and he believes that these systems can resolve the unpredictability of the bus system in a cost-effective manner.

The primary test cost of the project on Route 9 is $1,000 for one month. But don’t expect the town to pitch in, at least not yet. Support from both individual citizens and local businesses is vital to the success of this program, since the Transit Commission has not yet authorized it.

“We are hoping to be able to fund all or most of this test phase with private funds, demonstrating to the Transit Commission that there is public support for such a plan,” says Stephen Eggett, one of the project’s volunteers. “Since Route 9 has a direct impact on West Asheville and its businesses, we hope we can count on the West Asheville Business Association for support. In exchange for this support, we propose to advertise, on the buses, the businesses and associations that made this test possible,” he explains.

As for the icing on the cake, the GPS tracking program and intended road improvements, as dictated in the Asheville Master Downtown plan, will cohesively work together to allure new commuters. If the reliability of the bus system improves, more people will be attracted to the concept of commuting and many positive consequences can result, including less traffic and therefore less pollution in addition to more revenue for the transportation system.

Although a very inventive idea and greatly necessary for commuters, this is not the first time it has been brought to the drawing board. According to the Tufts Daily, this past spring Boston College implemented a GPS tracking program on their campus shuttle buses. This plan was based on designs from other colleges including Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University, Harvard University, and Tufts University.
